I would like to add something to my salon when I reopen that is new. Something that adds a peaceful healing feeling to my salon. What can I do or add?

As a black hairstylist, do you sometimes feel like you’re selling out when you end up working at a salon that doesn’t specialize in textured hair? Im having a hard time entering the industry and finding my nich!

Suite Life vs. Commission Salon Part 1 The great debate. This is a topic I am personally very passionate about. How can we keep moving our career forward during a time when we were forced to quit working? Because of this, it has accelerated the great migration to booth rentals and suite life. Don’t get me wrong. I am an advocate of entrepreneurship, creating your own life, and growing. But it’s not for everyone. Or. The timing isn’t right. I’m going to first talk on commission salons. Then we will go to booth/suite life. In my experience comm salons have provided education, growth, team work and a community you get to work with everyday. I love the collaboration of new techniques, booking conversations, retail challenges and learning how to encourage each other to find the right client/stylist fit. I also loved our morning huddles to talk about our goals, strategy and bonding. To me, I thrive when I get to share my struggles and successes. I hated doing mens cuts at my first salon. I was bad, traumatized by my mistakes, and afraid of learning. But because I worked in a comm salon I watched my coworker, the best mens cutter in the world! And I learned. I watched every moment I could. I saw how she interacted, trimmed, tailored, styled and rebooked. Because of this. I now charge my men $130. Whats the best part of working in a commission salon to you???

How is everyone feeling? With systematic racism being brought to the forefront I am both incredibly hopeful for our industry that we will make the changes that have been long overdue in our salons... however, I while trying to aid and support while respecting this is a MUCH needed moment for our black brothers and sisters to amplify their voices, I am afraid to deviate on my social media channels and discuss re opening procedures. I do not want to take away or stand in the way of POC however real life is also we’ve just survived one of the most difficult times of our professional and personal lives. Are other salon owners updating clients and proceeding with business announcements or does this need to be put on the back burner. I’m sorry if I sound tone death, I just want to be supportive.
